Children and adolescents
In working with children my interventions usually involve the concepts I have
written about in the family therapy section. In addition I primarily have people
come to me with one or two concerns. Then tend to either focus of behavior
problems including unusual behavior or parenting concerns. Lets start by
looking at parenting concerns. The majority of the time families come to me
with a child that is entering early adolescents and the techniques they used
before no longer work or the problems they are seeing are beyond their ability
of knowing what to do. Addressing this concern is often a matter of providing
psycho-educational interventions or more simply put advice. With a little advice
and guidance I have seen many seemingly overwhelming problems resolved
quickly. Children did not come with instructions and what we learned from our
families often doesn't work with our children. Asking for a little advice is one of
the best things you can ever do.
The second category involving problem behavior or behavior that seems out of
the norm can sometimes be scary. Many times I see parents who have concern
that their child is not doing well at school or he/she does not have many
friends. It maybe sad however I often meet with parents that have concerns
about children who "cut" on themselves or seem overly sad. These may be
signs of more serious mental health issues. Even though it maybe scary the
effectiveness of comprehensive treatment for children experiencing mental
health concerns is very positive. The sooner you come in the better. If you
have any questions please call or e-mail us. I have worked with many children
over the years and can tell you many success stories!
